Two men sentenced to death by hanging for 12k theft and murder

Two men sentenced to death by hanging for 12k theft and murder

Justice Ayodeji Daramola of an Ado-Ekiti High Court today sentenced two men, Michael Adams and Abass Mutiu, to death by hanging after they were found guilty of armed robbery and murder committed in January 2014.
Justice Daramola handed down the harsh verdict in which he found both men guilty for armed robbery contrary to Section (1) 2 (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2014, and murder which is contrary to Section 316 (1) and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State, 2015.
Justice Daramola held that the condemned suspects killed an innocent man and ordered that they be hanged on the neck until life goes out of them.
The charge sheet brought in by the prosecution team pointed out that Michael and Abass committed the offences on January 22nd, 2014, at Fiyinfolu Avenue, off Ilawe Road in the state capital where they robbed one Arowosere Kabiru of N12,800 while armed with dangerous weapons such as guns and cutlasses. During the attack, the convicted men also murdered one Ojo Adebola.
They were arraigned in court for the first time on March 1, 2016, and they pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
Four witneses were called in during the trial to give their evidence. One of the witnesses pointed to the suspects during an identification parade by the Ekiti state police command.

 PENGASSAN suspends its strike action

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has suspended its strike action which started today, December 18th. The suspension of the strike was contained in a press statement released by the General Secretary of the union, Lumumba Okugbawa.

The oil union had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, following allegations of the anti-union attitude of some companies, as well as the intimidation and dismissal of some of its members. Okungbawa said the union suspended the industrial action after the intervention of the Federal Government and the reversal of the decision by the companies.
Read the full statement below;
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) issued a seven (7) day ultimatum which expired on Sunday, December 17, 2017, with respect to anti-union posture of indigenous companies and marginal field operators, including Neconde which transferred employees at will and inconsiderably, sacked and intimidated union members.
Despite all entreaties by the association, the management of Neconde was recalcitrant and adamant. As a matter of fact, the union directed its members across zones to embark on a nationwide strike.
Going by the aforementioned, the Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, engaged both the leadership of PENGASSAN and the Neconde management.
The Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, representatives of the NNPC, and representatives of other government agencies were also in attendance.
Neconde management agreed to unconditionally recall the sacked staff and take steps to allow their employees to be members of the union.
It was also agreed at the meeting that the resolutions reached will be reviewed after three months to determine the adherence of Neconde management to the details of the resolution.
The meeting also resolved to address the anti-union posture of other indigenous companies and their abuse of court processes to stall the resolution of issues, including Specialty Drilling Fluid (SDF), CETCO, Century Energy, Oil Data Services, Frontier Oil, Universal Energy, Mobil Producing Nigeria and Fugro by the third week of January 2018, to avert a full-blown industrial crisis and ensure that they abide by the Nigeria Constitution, extant labour laws and ILO conventions.
In view of the above and in the spirit of the yuletide, on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of PENGASSAN, the Central Working Committee (CWC) hereby suspends the nationwide strike with immediate effect and all members are to resume normal duties immediately.
We commend Nigerians for their understanding and continue to promise to act in a morally justified way that will enhance the dignity of labour and reduce unemployment in the country.

Appeal Court sacks Kogi East Senator

Appeal Court sacks Kogi East Senator

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has sacked Senator Attai Aidoko, representing Kogi East Senatorial District tin the Nigerian senate. The court, in a judgment by a three-man panel led by Justice Abdu Aboki, reversed its earlier decision of December 14, 2016 on which basis Aidoko assumed office.
The appellate court held that its earlier judgment which nullified ex-Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Isaac Alfa’s election and installed Aidoko was given in error and said that the Kogi East Senatorial seat now remains vacant until the Federal High Court in Abuja determines the true candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the election held on July 24, 2016.
According the Nation, Alfa had challenged the Appeal Court ‘s decision of December 14th 2016 at the Supreme Court, which ordered that the suit over the dispute about the actual candidate of the party be heard on the merit by the trial court.
While the Federal High Court, Abuja was yet to give its verdict on the case before it, Aidoko filed an application at the Appeal Court, seeking an interpretation of the judgement of the Supreme Court and determine the eligible candidate to the  seat.
The judgment of the Court of Appeal Monday was on the application by Aidoko.
Justice Aboki, in the lead judgment, said the judgment of December 14, 2016 was in error, he reversed it and ordered Aidoko to vacate the seat, pending the determination of issue of candidacy at the court of first instance. The court ordered that the sum of N1 millon be paid by Aidoko to Mr Isaac Alfa whom the court held to be the lawfully nominated candidate of the PDP.
